NEX-CAL is a polyethylene-based film with a high mineral content and shape memory, designed as an alternative to multi-material paper, aluminium, PE laminates. It was created for products packed in cubes and blocks on fast wrapping machines: where paper gives the look, laminate gives the barrier, and neither gives both at once in a single film.

The wrapping machine needs a material that “remembers” the fold

NEX-CAL solution: a film with shape memory. The knife cuts the sheet, the former pre-folds it, the product goes in, the closure folds and stays folded. No spring-back, no flaps opening on the outfeed belt. Structure and thickness selected for the speed of your wrapping machine and the cube geometry.

Value for you: a switch from paper or laminate with no CAPEX and no line changeover. A test on your machine before the decision.

A paper, aluminium, PE laminate is three materials where one will do

NEX-CAL solution: one film instead of three layers. The aluminium goes, the paper goes, what remains is a PE-based film with a high mineral content. The pack construction gets simpler, and the fold memory needed in the packing process stays.

Value for you: packaging with no aluminium layer and no lamination of three materials, with less polymer per cube.

Grease migrates, the product dries out

NEX-CAL solution: a grease and moisture barrier built into the material, not added as a layer. Proven over years in butter, butter pats, curd cheese and lard. The test result for your product and shelf life is provided at the sample stage.

Value for you: shelf life at laminate level, with no barrier layers added on your side.

The consumer wants paper, and you need film

NEX-CAL solution: a matt, paper-like surface and the feel of paper. Printing up to 10 colours with food-contact inks, designed for the matt texture, so the packaging looks like kraft and behaves like film.

Value for you: a premium shelf effect without the risk that the “paper” will not hold the product.

Less plastic in the packaging

NEX-CAL solution: a high mineral content means less polymer per cube. The film is produced with a share of bio-based raw materials.

Value for you: a hard number for the ESG report and for the conversation with the retail chain: how many grams of polymer less per thousand packs.

Printing up to 10 colours on our own film, with food-contact inks, designed for a matt, paper-like surface. Film and print in one location, so colour does not drift between batches.

One supplier is responsible for the film, the colour, the shape memory and the deadline.
We check files for flexo before the run: minimum line weights, registration, ink compliance with 1935/2004.
The plates stay with us, so a repeat run does not start from zero settings.

Frequently asked technical questions

Will NEX-CAL run on my wrapping machine without a changeover?

In the vast majority of cases, yes. The film is designed for cube and block wrapping machines, with shape memory at the level of paper and laminate. Before the run you receive a trial reel for the parameters of your machine; if anything needs adjusting, it is usually knife speed or temperature, not mechanics.

How is NEX-CAL recycled?

At this stage we do not claim that NEX-CAL is recyclable in the PE film stream. The film contains a high share of mineral components, which requires a separate assessment against Design for Recycling guidelines (RecyClass, CEFLEX). We will make a recyclability claim only once it is confirmed by testing. What we can confirm today: no aluminium, one film instead of a paper, aluminium, PE laminate, and less polymer per pack.

Is it paper?

No. NEX-CAL looks and folds like paper, but it is a film. We say this openly, because PPWR assesses not only the material but also what the producer writes on the pack. A “paper” claim on this packaging would be untrue; the claim “PE-based film, no aluminium, less polymer” is true and holds up.

What is the grease resistance?

Proven over years in butter, butter pats, curd cheese, cheeses and lard. The minerals and the PE layer block grease migration to the outside of the pack; the surface stays matt and dry. For a specific product and shelf life we provide the test result.

What thickness?

The standard is 55 µm: the thickness at which cube forming is stable and the film runs on fast lines. Thinner versions are possible, but below 55 µm the cube closure loses stability compared with laminate. We select the thickness for the product and the machine.

Is the film suitable for direct food contact?

Yes. Production to the BRCGS Packaging Materials standard. We provide a declaration of compliance and tests under Regulation 1935/2004 and 10/2011 for specific product codes, compliance with REACH and Directive 94/62/EC. Microbiological tests for food applications current for 2025.

Can I order printed film?

Yes, up to 10 colours with food-contact inks, on our own film, in one location. If you print at your converter, we supply a reel prepared for their machine.

From what quantities?

From 500 kg per product code as standard; printed versions and non-standard widths are agreed individually. Technical sample in 5-10 working days, production run in 3-4 weeks.
