Fertiliser producer: a stretch hood with print that does not fade, and 22% less film per pallet

Fertiliser producer: a stretch hood with print that does not fade, and 22% less film per pallet

For a Polish fertiliser producer, the red in the logo on its stretch hoods faded after several weeks to several months of storage in distributors’ yards. An opaque white NEX-HOOD NHD 70 µm, printed with inks of increased UV resistance, ended the complaints about fading and also cut film use by approx. 22% per pallet.

In brief
  • Customer: a Polish fertiliser producer, domestic distribution and exports to European markets.
  • Problem: the intense red in the logo on the flexo-printed hood faded during outdoor storage, and the fertiliser was exposed to degradation by light.
  • Solution: NEX-HOOD NHD 70 µm in an opaque white version, flexo printing in up to 6 colours with inks of increased UV resistance, a UV stabiliser and a UV absorber.
  • Result: an end to complaints about faded print, approx. 22% less film per pallet (90 → 70 µm), implementation without modifying the packing line.

01 Customer

A Polish fertiliser producer with domestic distribution and exports to European markets. It packs fertiliser pallets in flexo-printed stretch hoods, and the brand logo contains an intense red.

02 Challenge

Red is one of the most difficult colours to keep stable under UV. After several weeks to several months of outdoor storage at distributors it faded, and the pallet stopped working as a carrier for the brand. Sales networks lacked visual consistency.

The second problem concerned the product itself: the fertiliser was exposed to degradation by light.

03 Solution

  • Film: NEX-HOOD NHD 70 µm in an opaque white version, with a formulation designed for fertiliser applications.
  • Printing: flexo in up to 6 colours with inks of increased UV resistance, with the focus on the stability of the red.
  • UV protection: a UV stabiliser in the film and a UV absorber protecting the product.
  • White film: additionally reflects radiation and limits heating of the load.
  • Thickness: along the way we went down from 90 to 70 µm without losing pallet stabilisation performance.

05 What this means for you

If your pallet stands in a distributor’s yard, the hood is your billboard. Fading print is not a printer’s problem but a question of choosing inks, stabilisers and film for a specific colour and a specific exposure time. That can be calculated and designed.

*Reduction calculated from the hood thickness: 90 → 70 µm equals 22.2%. The case study is anonymised.
